This is Just to Say

Standard

With apologies to WC Williams

This is just to say

I have written

my slice
for today
to be done

ready
for grading
and for posting
to end this quarter.

Forgive me
WC Williams
your poem

is now mine.

The original W. C. Williams poem:

This is Just to Say

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

  1. Ha! How creative! Love this “copycat poem.”

Do you mind if I use this for one of my Be Inspired posts later this month when I’m hosting the challenge? Please email me at dmurphy[at]msd143.org if I have your permission.

  2. “clone poem” is another term I’ve heard ~ the context was learning Spanish, assimilating grammatical structures by “cloning” a poem, in this case Sor Juana de la Cruz’ sonnet “Nada” (which is actually one long sentence).

    the fruit is cut
    more than
    220 slices
(wow, that’s a lot of blogging)
    the overripe fruit
    bruised and
    rotten,
    the ripened fruit
    so sweet
    and delicious.
